This demonstration plant can be used in a broad range of applications. Over a ten-month period, the plant achieved stable production of boiler feed water at a rate of approximately 135l/hour using waste heat from an incineration plant and cooling water from a cooling tower. Surface water was used as an influent for this application. This demonstrated that MD can be used at extremely low temperatures to produce high-quality distillate with a conductivity which never exceeds 3 μS/cm.
Demonstration of reliable MD process and modules for producing boiler feed water
The relatively low flux was no surprise, given the low top temperature of 34 °C and a driving force over the membrane of only 4 °C. The installation contained 12 modules, each with 7.2 m² of membrane surface area. Almost 500,000 litres of perfect boiler feed water was produced with no problems.
